Why are we doing this anyway?

Our goal for this auction is to raise $5150--two full semester's worth of BYU tuition--for our Replenishment Grant fund, which goes to BYU students from the Kansas City area who need our help to finish their education.  Almost always they are upperclassmen who are supporting themselves and it really makes a difference in their lives. It is called a Replenishment Grant because it is given in the spirit of the Perpetual Education Fund, and the recipients are asked to pay the fund back when and if they can so that others coming behind them can receive the same benefit they did.  Last academic year, we were able to offer 4 students grants and we would love to expand this to even more students.  We always have many more applications than grants available.  One past recipient is Whitney.  This is what she says about receiving the grant:

I received the Kansas City Alumni Replenishment Grant as a pregnant student trying to complete my last semester-and-a-half of school, which included an unpaid internship with a nonprofit organization. Knowing we wanted to pursue medical training, my husband and I had made it a goal to finish our undergraduate degrees without debt. I can still remember the great gratitude and relief I felt when I was awarded the grant money -- it was truly an answer to my prayers that not only helped us financially, but provided me with relief and boosted my confidence. It showed me that Heavenly Father knows us as individuals and He cares about our well-being, happiness and even our self-confidence. I am forever grateful for the education I received and the means by which I attained it. I look forward to contributing to the replenishment grant and paying forward the help that made such a difference to me.

Brad Smith Fine Art Original Print

9x17 signed, framed fine art print.  Totems and Transgenics portray a confluence of biology, culture, and technology through totem-like representations of human embryos based on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The human embryo has become a nexus for deliberating what it means to be an organism, human, a person, and a citizen. The embryo is variously considered in our culture as property, family member, medical cure, bearer of legal rights, experimental material, a potential, and an actualized individual.  Even detached from its cultural connotations, the images are compelling.  This particular print is in muted greens and browns on a field of deep cranberry and has the appearance of a complex tapestry.

About the donor:  Brad Smith is the chair of the art department at the University of Michigan.  He holds degrees in anatomy and art from Johns Hopkins University and is known for his MRI research on embryos and his art.

Piece of the Eight Witnesses Monument

On the 100th anniversary of the dedication of the Three Witnesses Monument in Richmond Missouri, a new monument was dedicated to the Eight Witnesses of the Book of Mormon. It stands at the location of the graves of two of the Eight Witnesses to the Book of Mormon, which is also the location of the organization of the first stake in Missouri and the second stake in the Church, and also the location at which Zion's Camp was disbanded. It is just a few miles south of Liberty Missouri. The Eight Witnesses Monument is patterned after the Three Witnesses Monument and the stone from the two monuments is quarried from the same quarry in Vermont as the Joseph Smith birthplace memorial. When the stone was quarried a few extra pieces were quarried as souvenirs. This is one of those historic pieces and has engraved the events of the dedication of the Eight Witnesses monument.

About the donor: Jeremiah Morgan has always had a testimony of the Book of Mormon and knew the truth would be in a church of the restoration.  After growing up in the RLDS (now Community of Christ) church, he was baptized into the LDS church at 18 and served a mission in Guam where he got to be a personal witness of the truth of the Book of Mormon.
